Consequences of not Replacing Amalgam Fillings

- CONDITION:
Over time, silver fillings corrode, which allows bacteria to enter the tooth. Silver fillings expand and contract every time we eat or drink hot or cold foods which creates stress in the tooth, leading to cracked teeth.
- CONSEQUENCES:
When old silver fillings aren’t replaced, the cracks can deepen over time and eventually split the tooth, causing a fracture. Sometimes when this happens, we can still repair the tooth with a crown and a root canal, but often if the tooth fractures it has to be removed.
